SPRINT Fellowships
SPRINT Fellowships
Types of SPRINT Fellowships
There are two types of SPRINT Fellowships:
- Brown-Generated SPRINT Fellowships
Brown-generated fellowships are listed opportunities with Brown faculty, host organizations, and community partners that are reserved for Brown students. - Student-Generated SPRINT Fellowships
Student-generated fellowships are internships and research projects that students secure or develop in partnership with faculty, host organizations, and community partners. These fellowships are offered only in the summer.
Fellowship Timing
SPRINT Fellowships come in two distinct flavors, each designed to fit different stages of the academic calendar:
- Semester Fellowships (Fall and Spring): If you want to balance your studies with a significant co-curricular experience, consider a semester fellowship! Your coursework remains your top priority, and the fellowship is designed to be a substantial, but manageable, commitment of about 10 hours per week. This is a great way to gain experience without sacrificing your academic focus.
- Summer Fellowships: If you're ready for an intensive, immersive experience, the Summer SPRINT is for you! During the summer, your primary focus will be your fellowship, meaning you won't be able to register for courses. This allows you to fully dedicate yourself to your project, making significant progress and gaining deep insights. It's an excellent opportunity for concentrated work.
Prioritization
Our goal is to make the SPRINT Fellowship accessible to as many students as possible and catalyze experiential learning. To achieve this, we prioritize new applicants for specific types of fellowships. This means if you've already completed a summer SPRINT Fellowship, your application for a different summer fellowship will be given less preference than a student who has not yet had a summer SPRINT opportunity. The same applies to semester fellowships: if you've already completed one, your second semester fellowship application will have lower priority.
This isn't an automatic rejection! We still review every application from eligible students, including those from past SPRINT Fellows. However, your chances of being selected are lower. This approach helps us:
- Promote fairness and access: We want to give a wider range of students the chance to gain valuable experience through a SPRINT Fellowship.
- Encourage diverse experiences: We encourage you to explore different types of fellowships, like a semester fellowship after completing a summer one, and to seek out other valuable opportunities inside and outside of Brown that align with your career and learning goals.
Eligibility
Eligibility restrictions help ensure wide access to SPRINT Fellowships across the student body, distributing the limited SPRINT funding available in support of more students.
- SPRINT Fellowships are only available to active Brown undergraduate students, who are not currently on leave.
- Students who are actively enrolled as part of study abroad or study away are eligible to apply for SPRINT Fellowships for future terms (such that the fellowship begins after their study abroad or study away program has concluded).
- For Summer SPRINT Fellowships, you must be enrolled during both the prior spring and following fall semesters. (Students who take a leave of absence during the Spring 2026 semester, or plan to take a leave for the Fall 2026 semester, will not be eligible for a Summer 2026 SPRINT Fellowship.)
- For Fall and Spring Semester SPRINT Fellowships, you may not be on a leave of absence from Brown either during the semester you apply or during the semester when you would participate in a SPRINT Fellowship.
- A student may not apply or be selected for a semester SPRINT Fellowship with the same host organization or faculty mentor with whom they completed a summer SPRINT Fellowship.
- There is a cap on the number of SPRINT Fellowships a student can receive. Generally, students are ineligible to receive three SPRINT Fellowships. However, there is an exception: a student can receive three fellowships if two of them are Semester Fellowships and one is a Summer Fellowship.
- Additionally, a student may be ineligible if they did not complete the Stewardship Summer Reflection or did not adhere to the SPRINT Principles during a prior SPRINT Fellowship.
- Students may not have multiple simultaneous fellowships or receive fellowship funding from other sources at Brown at the same time as a SPRINT Fellowship.
- The SPRINT team will work with Brown’s Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards to ensure that applicants are in compliance with conduct expectations.
